The former college student, now 23 years old, was found guilty of the 2020 murder on Wednesday by a jury in Summit County, Ohio.

Powell, a native of Akron, was charged with murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence in connection with the death of her mother Brenda Powell, 50. She was found guilty on all of these counts.

The prosecutor’s office stated in a press release that Powell stabbed Brenda Powell almost 30 times in the neck in March 2020 after striking her in the head with an iron skillet.

Powell was 19 at the time of her mother’s death.

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, the former Mount Union University student sobbed as the verdicts were announced.

Powell, according to the prosecution, did not want her mother to find out that she had been expelled from college.

According to authorities, Brenda was attacked by her daughter and died at a nearby hospital. According to CourtTV, she worked as a child life specialist at Akron Children’s Hospital for almost three decades.
